Sarratt Walk 02
The Plough, Belsize
A relatively short circular walk of just 3.5 miles starting and ending at Sarratt village hall.
It's a gentle, relatively flat walk (a few small inclines around Plough Wood) that is suitable for families, although of course any accompanying dogs must be kept under control at all times, and meanders through the fields and woods in particular the lovely Plough Wood, a veritable carpet of Bluebells in spring.
Note should be taken of a very narrow footpath section between Bragmans Land and Flaunden Lane, this is only about 200yds but pushchairs or buggies might be difficult to take through - however you can ignore the Flaunden Lane section and progress to Belsize directly along Bragmans Lane instead, so it doesn't stop anyone from completing this walk.
This walk took me about an 1hr 20mins. on a lovely day in very early May 2012.
A map of the walk is attached HERE

With your back to the Village Hall go left up the Green, keeping to the left hand side and passing the shop. Notice the beautiful oak trees, each one so symmetrical, just lovely, down the centre of the Green. Continue onwards past Dawes Lane on your left and The Boot PH on your right, then just past the old Victorian post box there is a footpath on your left by Morton's Cottage
|
Turn left through this beautiful avenue of trees between the houses and then pass through a kissing gate and into an open field.
Continue on, keeping to the left hand side along by the hedgerows until you come across another kissing gate which you continue through and into Dawes Common. |
The northern exit is through these gates at the right of this track and on down this avenue of trees (see picture below)
At the end go through the kissing gate, notice the commemorative seat (see picture below) on your right and then proceed through the fields to Moor Lane |
As you approach Rosehall Farm keep to your right as the track forks.
Proceed on about 30yds then turn sharp right beside some barns and along a small footpath until you emerge out onto Bragmans Lane |
The footpath continues directly across Bragmans Lane and, as you can see this is a narrow path, it is only a short path of about 150yards but.........
For those with buggies/pushchairs this is where you might want to turn right down Bragmans Lane instead, turning left at Poles Hill then down into Belsize. Otherwise go forward on this footpath and emerge on Flaunden Lane where you turn right and proceed ahead to The Plough Inn in Belsize. |
The Plough Inn at the crossroads in Belsize
If you approach from Flaunden Lane then stay on the right hand side of the road, go past The Plough Inn and follow the road around the corner, up Poles Hill, for about 50 yards and hidden in the hedgerow on the opposite (left) side of the road you should see a stile hidden in the hedgerows. Cross the road - carefully! Then cross the stile and proceed diagonally across the field to the top left corner and into Plough Wood. If you have come via Flaunden Lane and then down Poles Hill then the stile will be on your right close to the bottom. |
Plough Wood is absolutely beautiful in late April early May (when this photo was taken) as it is awash with bluebells.
Follow the path through the wood until you almost, but not quite, reach Sarratt Road. Do not go as far as the road but a matter of a couple of yards before, the path turns sharp left and proceeds away from the road and on down to Plough Lane, where you turn right. |
At the Old Forge turn left along The Green, heading into Sarratt and after about 500 yards you should arrive back at the Sarratt Village Hall.
I hope you enjoyed your walk, and that the weather was kind. If you found any errors, spelling or otherwise, or difficulty with my directions then do please let me know, I'm always looking to improve my information. Suggestions are also always welcome. |
