Sarratt Walk 08
Footpath from Bottom Lane to The Briars
A relatively short circular walk of just 3.5 miles beginning and ending at Sarratt village hall.
It's a gentle, relatively flat walk that is suitable for families, although of course any accompanying dogs must be kept under control at all times, and meanders through the lovely Commonwood woods passing the beautiful Commonwood House and on through the fields.
This walk took me a little under an 1hr 30mins on a cloudy but warm day in mid July 2012.
A map of the walk is attached HERE

There is some limited parking in front of the village hall but if full then off road parking is available in surrounding roads.
Start with your back to the village hall, turn left and walk up towards The Green, passing "The Cricketers" public house and the village pond. Continue on past the school and shop on your left hand side and "The Boot" public house on your right. Observe the beautiful oak trees in the centre of the green. Continue on through to the end of the Green (in total about 800yds) where all pavements have ceased to exist - until you reach a signposted footpath on your right to Commonwood. Turn right down this track and go forward past the houses. |
Go right at Plough Lane, cross the grass triangle by Dellfield House and take the footpath (much less muddy than the bridle path), which runs parallel with the bridle path.
(Enlarge the picture and the footpath/bridle path sign can be seen just to the right of the centre tree) Follow this up through Commonwood towards Bucks Hill to emerge beside Commonwood House. |
Go left along the road past the impressive Commonwood House, the cross over and head for the footpath, marked Bucks Hill in the far corner. It's a little overgrown and not immediately obvious but this picture of Commonwood House was taken standing at the path's entrance, so that may help identify its location.
|
At the top of the field cross another stile beside a gate onto a broad track leading to Bucks Hill Farm, but almost immediately (20yds) turn left down a wide but pretty well hidden path.
This path leads past several bungalows and out onto Bucks Hill Road, where you turn right. |
Walk just beyond "Griffinhurst" and take the footpath immediately beside it into an arable field.
Follow the path, keeping to the left hand edge until you cross over through the hedge boundary and continue on the other side in the adjacent field, keeping beside the hedge now on your right. Go left around the corner at the end of the hedge and take narrow diagonal path through another field. |
At the end of the field you proceed along a nice grassy path borderd by a high hedge on the right and a pretty copse on the left aiming for this impressive conifer hedge at the far end, where you emerge onto Langleybury Fields. Turn left here heading towards Bucks Hill.
|
Follow Quickmoor Lane until you reach The Coach and Horses public house where you turn left and follow the road back down the hill, keeping to the left at the fork as you enter Common Wood (it's the name of the road here) and passing Commonwood House over on the right.
Proceed forward to the bottom of the hill. |
Cross the stile onto the footpath which runs straight ahead alongside the field.
Look at the stables, where there are usually many horses to see. Follow this path straight ahead up the hill, through the copse, straight on beside the tennis courts until you emerge into The Briars. |
This is a picturte of the exit from the footpath onto The Briars.
From here proceed forward on George V Way and directly opposite is the VIllage Hall - from whence you started!! I hope you enjoyed your walk, and that the weather was kind. If you found any errors, spelling or otherwise, or difficulty with my directions then do please let me know, I'm always looking to improve my information. Suggestions are also always welcome. |
